Exam Invigilator, Scribe and Reader Roles
Hours: Shift time estimates - AM 8:15 - 12:00 and PM 12:30 - 15:45 (flexibility is paramount)
Salary: £15.03 per hour plus accrued holiday pay
Contract: Casual
Part-time work throughout the academic year, as there are periods when more hours may be required.
The job description may include, but not limited to:
Invigilators oversee students in the main exam hall as well as our smaller room venues. You must be comfortable working on your feet, be observant, patient, calm, supportive and meticulous in any related administrative duties that form part of this role.
Readers are required to read through questions and source material for exams. A strong understanding of, and fluency in, the English language is essential.
Scribes are required to write on behalf of students with special educational or additional needs. Strong spelling, grammar and handwriting abilities are a must.
Main responsibilities:
To support the Exams Department with the day-to-day operation of examination venues. Activities may include:
- Assisting with setting-up examination venues by laying out stationery, equipment and examination papers in accordance with strict procedures as well as setting up laptops for use by the students as required.
- Assisting candidates prior to the start of examinations by directing them to their seats and advising them about possessions permitted in examination venues.
- Ensuring that candidates do not talk once inside examination venues.
- Invigilating during examinations, dealing with queries raised by candidates and dealing with examination irregularities in accordance with strict procedures via communications with the Senior Invigilators/Exams Office
- Checking attendance during examinations if requested by the Senior Inviglator
- Recording details of late arrivals on prepared forms
- Escorting candidates from venues during the examinations as required, and supervising candidates whilst outside examination venues.
- Collecting and collating scripts at the end of the examination in accordance with strict procedures.
- Supervising candidates leaving examination venues, ensuring that candidates leave venues in an orderly and quiet manner.
To be successful:
- You will need a valid Enhanced DBS which will be arranged by the school for the successful applicants.
- JCQ training would be advantageous but not essential
- Candidates would preferably have experience working as an invigilator or within a school setting, but we do provide full training for suitable applicants if this is not the case.
