Information about the school
Whybridge Junior School is a two form entry Junior School, expanding to three-form entry, in the heart of the South Hornchurch community. The original part of the school building is over 100 years old and has been extended over the years.
The school first opened in 1889 under the leadership of Mr.H.J.Harris who led the school for 31 years! It was originally called the South Hornchurch Board School and was built at a cost of £3,100. The site was bought for a mere £210! Since then the school has expanded and extended to its current day form with the first extension added in 1933. The school has a rich history that it is very proud of. School log books date back to the day the school opened and provides a wide range of fascinating information and stories from the past. This includes in depth details of life during the world wars. Children in school love hearing about stories such as the time when two bombs landed in the road outside the school and blew all the windows out. Pupils also enjoy looking at the pupil registration records of the school and spotting family members. Despite the schools extensive history, the school continues to thrive and grow. In more recent times school has developed into an education facility fit for the 21st century. In the existing 1889 building we now have wireless networks, interactive whiteboards, cross curriculum media, I-pads with access to I-cloud, Chromebooks, CCTV etc. Externally, we now have an all-weather pitch facility, an environmental area, a community park, cricket nets etc. How times have changed, however the evolution and development of Whybridge Junior School will continue way into the future and thrive at the heart of the community.
The latest stage in the long and successful history of Whybridge Junior School is its conversion to Academy status within the Hornchurch Academy Trust in September 2017. Since then, the school has grown in success, recently reaching the top place position in Havering for its Key Stage 2 results 2019. Whybridge Junior School is now an oversubscribed school, with a waiting list, as parents recognise the friendly and ambitious place of learning we provide.
We strongly advise that you visit us to get a better flavour for life at Whybridge and to meet our wonderful children and friendly team! Please telephone the school office on 01708 551712 to make an appointment.
